Augusta Gross

SPRUCE PINE, N.C. —Augusta Lorena Gross, age 91, of the Altapass Community, passed away January 13, 2022, at Brian Center Health & Rehab in Spruce Pine.

Born on June 30, 1930, in Mitchell County, she was the daughter of the late Jeff and Mae Cox Buchanan.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband; Glenn Gross; her sons, Phillip, and Michael Gross; her daughter-in-Law, Leslie Spears Gross; her son-In-Law, Seth Byrd; her brothers, Milburn, Bill, Phillip, Jack, Jay, Gene, and Jason Buchanan and her sisters, Lucille Grindstaff and Elizabeth Burleson.

Augusta was a faithful member of the Altapass Baptist Church.   She loved her family and God.   She enjoyed cooking, planting a garden, and canning the ‘fruits of her labor’.  Even during her most recent illness, she was providing guidance on how best to plant sweet potatoes.   Every year, she called family members on their birthday and shared memories of their birth.  Her family will miss her special Spaghetti dinners, her Birthday meals and her yearly batches of home-made jelly.  Most of all, they will miss her example of faith that she instilled in all who knew her.

Left to cherish her memory is her children; Charles and Ruth Gross of Spruce Pine, Cathy and Johnny Robinson of Lexington, NC, Jill Byrd of Spruce Pine, Rebecca and Michael Whitworth of Orlando, FL, Mary and Dale Sparks of Bakersville, John Gross of Spruce Pine, Paul and Kristy Gross of Augusta, GA, and Barry and Tammy Gross of Spruce Pine.   Also left to cherish her memory are twenty-one grandchildren, twenty-six great-grandchildren, and 4 great-great grandchildren.
