A Penland-area home burned down recently, with no injuries.

Mitchell County Fire Marshall Andrew Brewer confirmed that there was a house fire on Sunday, June 23. Spruce Pine Fire and Rescue Chief Josh Boone said the fire resulted in a total loss.

“It was a Sunday morning at 7:30 — we had a structure fire on Rabbit Hop Road, a single residence,” Boone said.

Spruce Pine Fire and Rescue was assisted in putting out the fire by mutual aid from Bakersville Fire Department, Ledger Fire Department, Parkway Fire and Rescue and Newdale Fire Department.

Boone said the resident of the home was able to get out of the building safely. The entire structure was burning by the time firefighters arrived.

“It was fully involved when we got there — it was pretty much already gone when we got there,” Boone said.

“The homeowner was the one that called it in — he got out and got his dogs out,” said Boone.

Boone said that the home was not very close to any water sources, which complicated putting the fire out. However, he said that there was not much left to save when firefighters arrived anyway.

“It was a total loss when we got there,” Boone said. “He [also] lost a vehicle and a boat that was next to the house.”

A fundraiser to help the fire victims has been set up on the website GoFundMe: https://www.gofundme.com/f/urgent-relief-for-fathers-fire-loss.
