With filing opening for the 2024 Primary Election set for March 5, 2024 a handful of candidates did not leave voters guessing about their intent to seek office.
A total of six people filed for the upcoming primary on Monday.
Filing for the seats on the Mitchell County Board of Commissioners were Incumbent Harley Masters (R), Lee Ellis (R), and Jan Hamilton (D).
There are three seats up for election this year on the board of county commissioners. Those seats are currently held by Masters, Brandon Pittman, and Clayton Roberts. As of 4:30 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 4, Pittman and Roberts had not filed.
Filing for the Register of Deeds office was Kathy Laws (R).
Incumbent Brenda Sparks filed for a seat on the Mitchell County Board of Education. There are two seats on the BOE up for election this year. Sparks fills one of those seats while the other is currently held by Sam Blevins.
Also filing for re-election with the Mitchell County Board of Elections was N.C. Senator Ralph Hise. Hise is a native of Mitchell County.
During the redistricting in 2023, Mitchell County was moved from the District 5 Congressional district, which is currently filled by U.S. Rep. Virginia Foxx, to District 11 currently represented by U.S. Rep. Chuck Edwards.
The deadline for filing for the 2024 March Primary is noon, Friday, Dec. 15.
