Mitchell County’s Owen Young traveled to the annual North Carolina 4-H Electric Congress in Wilmington as the county’s youth representative.

Young received this honor as the county 2023 4-H electric champion. He has been involved in the Megabytes 4-H Electric Club and in the Science and Technology Club since he graduated to the junior program.

Young is the son of Aaron and Crystal Young of Bakersville where he is in the eighth grade at Bowman Middle School.

Among his most successful accomplishments is a district award for his electric project in the west. He was also named the State 4-H Electric Presentation gold winner in the 8-10--year-old division in Raleigh.

While at 4-H Electric Congress, Young explored careers with companies in the electricity industry and experienced cutting-edge technology as he checked out a Tesla Car and a Ford Lightning Pick-Up.

He also toured the Brunswick Nuclear Station Energy Center where he learned about power generation. Another of the learning experiences was watching a Duke Energy Progress High-Voltage Energy Safety demonstration. Young also attended the Awards Banquet and received his county plaque.

During the second afternoon, the delegates were treated to time at a water park in Wilmington as another reward for a year of hard work.

After returning to the county, Owen helped teach a summer 4-H program and demonstrated soldering techniques. He also discussed his trip to the 4-H Electric Congress and shared how the program participants could earn a trip to the 2024 Congress.

Serving as Young’s chaperone on the trip was Steve Rowland, who provides leadership for the Megabytes 4-H Electric Club in Mitchell County.
