Local, state and regional supporters and funders of the new YMCA slated for Mitchell County were on hand Nov. 3 for the ground breaking ceremony.
In 2019, AMY Wellness Foundation (AMYWF) made a commitment to aid in the expansion of the Williams YMCA of Avery County into Mitchell County. Officially under construction, the Mitchell County YMCA marks a significant stride toward fostering health, recreation, and unity within our community. AMYWF was the first major financial supporter of the project.
Upon completion of the Three Peaks Enrichment Center project, Mitchell County and surrounding area residents of all ages will have a safe place to prioritize the health of their mind, body, and spirit. The Mitchell County YMCA will include a Wellness Center, aquatics facility, and group exercise classes that will provide opportunities to improve physical
health. Additional classrooms will be utilized for specific Evidence-based Health Intervention (EBHI) programs that focus on the prevention and management of chronic diseases and conditions. The YMCA will offer volunteer and outreach programs to uphold the community by delivering food and medications to seniors aging in place, ensuring children have clothing that fits and food to sustain them when they are not in school, developing leadership skills through mentoring programs and all-inclusive sports. The YMCA will also continue offering youth a safe and enriching environment in after-school programs with plans to expand into summer camp offerings.
“At the YMCA, we are for Youth Development, Healthy Living and Social Responsibility,” said Trey Oakley, YMCA Chief Executive Officer. “Without like-minded partners such as the AMY Wellness Foundation, our project would only be a dream. We are incredibly thankful for AMY Wellness Foundation Board of Directors, staff, and generous donors for their support. AMY’s initial commitment allowed the YMCA to complete its feasibility study and preliminary architectural design plans. In celebrating the groundbreaking of the new Mitchell County YMCA, we extend our heartfelt gratitude for AMY’s steadfast collaboration in rural communities, promoting positive change. We look forward to the work ahead and cutting the ribbon to Mitchell County’s new YMCA in the near future.”
The Mitchell County YMCA stands as a testament to the power of collaboration and philanthropy in shaping the future of our community. By providing a central hub for health and wellness, recreational activities, and community engagement, this facility will become a cornerstone for positive change in Mitchell County.
“The Mitchell County YMCA is a testament to resilience, collaboration and a promise of positive change for the community,” said John Blackburn, AMYWF Board Chair.
“At AMY Wellness Foundation, we are thrilled to see this project come to life, a testament to our commitment to community well-being, innovation, and transformation,” he said.
The ground breaking ceremony was a momentous occasion attended by key community leaders, stakeholders, and supporters who have contributed to the success of this venture.
“AMYWF remains committed to fostering partnerships that empower communities to thrive,” said Blackburn. “Our foundation is honored to act as the catalyst for this significant endeavor, and we look forward to witnessing the lasting impact the YMCA will have on the lives of its residents.”
AMY (Avery, Mitchell, Yancey) Wellness Foundation was established as a result of the Mission Health System sale to HCA Healthcare to ensure health and wellness was still a main priority in our area of western North Carolina. Their mission is to improve the health and wellbeing of the residents of Avery, Mitchell and Yancey counties by partnering with local nonprofits, fostering connections among services, and supporting programs that make our communities a healthier place.
