Mitchell High grad Halley Wheeler was part of a recent historic performance for USA Beach Wrestling in Constanta, Romania.

Wheeler competed in both the Under 20 World Championships and the Senior World Series division. In the senior competition, she was the youngest athlete but was on hand to witness her teammate Eliana Bommarito of Michigan bring home the first U.S. Gold medal in the senior series. The US Women’s team finished fifth overall, just three points shy of placing in the top three.

In the U20 World Championships, she helped Team USA score its first team trophy, with the group finishing third behind Romania and Ukraine. It was the first USA Beach Wrestling team trophy in 17 years.

Wheeler finished sixth overall in the U20 competition. She had qualified for the event by winning the U.S. Beach Nationals in May, as well as a second-place finish in the senior women’s competition.

She will return to compete for Montreat this winter but will look to return to the sand next summer and potentially represent Team USA again in international competition.
