Toys for Tots: Spreading holiday cheer

The Toys for Tots program began in 1947 by a Marine and his wife seeking to support children in their community. It was officially established as a nonprofit by the Marine Corps in 1991. In Mitchell County, Mark Thomas and his team have been instrumental in supporting over 400 children annually through this initiative.

To adhere to the program’s guidelines, no item can exceed $35 in cost, and all purchases are meticulously reported to the headquarters in Washington, D.C. The local program relies on around 70 volunteers each year and is bolstered by contributions from businesses and churches.

Fundraising efforts are year-round, with toy ordering starting in September and distribution to families in December. Notably, inmates from Avery and Mitchell County prisons contributed $1,000 this year from an in-prison dinner fundraiser, significantly aiding the program’s financial needs.

Thomas emphasizes the personal touch of the program, aiming to give children gifts they truly desire, ensuring that the joy of Christmas reaches every child in need.
