Shop With A Cop

In the heart of Mitchell County, the spirit of giving and community shone brightly at the 16th annual Shop With A Cop event. Spearheaded by Police Chief Kasey Cook of Spruce Pine, this event has become a cherished tradition since its inception in 2008. From its modest beginnings, supporting 13 children to 64 children this year, the event exemplifies the power of community spirit.

Partnering with the Mitchell County Sheriff’s Department, Bakersville Police Department, and the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, the program has expanded its reach, allowing more children to experience a memorable Christmas.

The day started with community volunteers gathering at the Spruce Pine Fire Department. Officers and volunteers teamed up with selected children for a shopping spree at Walmart, funded by donations from the community, where each child received $275 to spend on Christmas gifts.

In a touching display of community involvement, young entrepreneurs Bell (9) and Penny (8) contributed $200 to the cause, a sum raised through selling golf balls over the summer. Their dedication highlights the program’s far-reaching influence, inspiring even the youngest in our community.

Speaking with Melody, a participant, her excitement was palpable. “We get to pick out whatever we want!” she exclaimed.

“I just thought it was something the community and kids needed, and something us officers needed to bring us together and have a positive influence on the kids,” said Cook, reflecting on the program’s inception. His vision of creating a bridge between law enforcement and youth has materialized into a meaningful and enduring tradition.

Looking forward to the event’s impact, Cook expressed his heartfelt intentions

“For some of them, this is the only Christmas they’ll have,” said Cook. “They need to know that we’re here and we care about them.”

As the group embarked on their shopping adventure, Cook’s parting words, “Now the fun part begins!” encapsulated the essence of the day – a celebration of community, care, and the joy of giving.
