The Spruce Pine skateboard park project discussed just weeks ago during a regular meeting of the Spruce Pine Town Council is already progressing.

The council met again on Monday, March 14 and discussed the project again. At the conclusion of the previous discussion, the biggest question remaining was where the skateboard park would go.

Councilmember James Acuff brought up the topic during the council comments portion of the meeting and pointed to a tract of flat land in Riverside Park near the Mitchell Giving Gardens as a suitable site for the park.

While the suggestion is a large step forward for the project, some questions remain, said town attorney Chad Donnahoo.

Donnahoo said there is more discussion needed and some questions that must be answered before the town enters into a formal agreement. He agreed to prepare a list of things that will need to be ironed out before the project can proceed.

In the meantime, project organizers started a Facebook page called “Spruce Pine Skatepark.” Jimmy Hinshaw, Lex Georgeou and Kelly Georgeou are listed as group administrators.

The group had 125 members as of Wednesday, March 16.

“We are very grateful that we now have a location from the town and now the hard work of fundraising begins,” one of the first posts in the group reads. “We will post updates on the process and if and when help will be needed. Thanks to all who have been supporting the process and will continue to support our dream.”

As the project progresses, fundraising will be a key aspect. Hinshaw said during his presentation on the park during the Feb. 28 meeting that the goal is to see the park be entirely self-funded.

For information on fundraising, check the Facebook page or call 467-4525 or 385-6253.

“The park will be located in Riverside Park and will be able to be used by all ages and lots of wheeled ‘toys’,” the Facebook group description reads. “Look here for posts on updates of progress, fundraising and for when help is needed. Thanks for all of your support!”
