Two died as result of injuries from 2023 wreck
Ricky McPeters, a 67-year-old resident of Yancey County, entered a guilty plea this last week to two counts of felony death by vehicle along with possession of methamphetamine. The charges stem from a tragic accident on July 6, 2023, on U.S. 221 north of Marion, which resulted in the deaths of two young individuals.
On the day of the accident, McPeters was driving a 2012 GMC pickup when he crossed into the opposing lane, causing a head-on collision with a 2020 Buick and a 2017 Jeep Cherokee. Delaney Janet Leierzapf, a 21-year-old passenger in the Jeep, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Jeep, Caius Peterson Arrington, a 20-year-old from Bakersville and a well-known local athlete, was critically injured and later died in the hospital on July 7 after being removed from life support.
The court has sentenced McPeters to two consecutive terms of six to eight years in prison.
The other vehicle involved, driven by Lori McIntire of Spruce Pine, contained three passengers, including an infant; fortunately, they were unharmed.
Caius Arrington was celebrated in his community for his achievements in high school sports and his character. His passing was marked by an honor walk, reflecting the profound impact of his life, particularly through his final act of organ donation. His memory is cherished by a loving family and community that continues to feel his loss deeply.
