POPLAR — The 14th annual Run for the Hills car show, hosted by Carolina PushRodz, brought hundreds of vintage and muscle cars, food vendors, raffles and a burnout competition to Poplar.

Hundreds of visitors packed the field to view the cars and support the food vendors. The cars of visitors, as they do each year, lined the side of the road leading up to the festival site.

Mitchell County Transportation provided a free shuttle from parking areas to the show.

Attendees like Todd Hughes enjoyed the event. Hughes called it “the greatest car show in the south.”

Attendee Lora Merlott came from nearly two hours away just to attend Run for the Hills.

“There were a lot of great vehicles,” Merlott said. “A very well-planned event. Definitely worth driving over an hour and a half to get there.”

Car lovers and motorcycle enthusiasts found plenty to enjoy at the festival and food vendors such as the Hungarian Sausage King were at the event, catering to long lines as the event went on. Southern Belle’s Lemonade stand offered thirst-quenchers for attendees.

As is the case each year, the burnout contest put an exclamation mark on the event, with droves of people gathering around to see drivers burn rubber and make plenty of smoke.
