As industries, government and education facilities continued to expand in Mitchell County in 2023, the county also welcomed a host of new businesses. These additions not only enrich the local economy but also bring diverse services and experiences to area residents. Each new opening is a step towards diversifying our local offerings and enhancing the quality of life for all residents. While this list provides a snapshot of new businesses and entities in Mitchell County, it may not be exhaustive.

Waterworx Laundry and Dog Wash: A unique combination of self-service laundry and dog wash station.
Dayspring Family and Wellness: Focuses on holistic family health with a range of wellness services.
Mineral City Yoga: Offers yoga classes for all levels, promoting physical and mental well-being.

Government and education also began expanding facilities and services in 2023.
The construction of the new Mitchell Middle School began in the spring. The $48 million project is expected to be completed by the fall of 2025. The new school will house students in grades 3 to 8 and will have a capacity of up to 900 students. When completed the new middle school, located in Ledger, will consolidate students from Harris Middle in Spruce Pine, Bowman Middle in Bakersville, Deyton Elementary in Spruce Pine and 3rd and 4th grade students from Gouge Elementary in Bakersville.
The groundbreaking ceremony for the new Mitchell County YMC was held on Nov. 3. The $15.3 million complex, located at the Three Peaks Enrichment Center in Spruce Pine is expected to open in March 2025. The facility will include a state-of-the-art aquatic center, a health and wellness hub, and youth development spaces.
Mitchell County began renovations for a new $5 million law enforcement center, located in the former Quality Plus Apparel factory in Bakersville. The law enforcement center will feature accommodations for a staff of approximately 25, an evidence processing facility, interview rooms, sheriff and chief deputy offices and meeting areas, detective offices and work area, an armory, conference and training rooms, K-9 kennels, patrol deputy facilities, lockers and physical training space, arrestee processing area, two temporary holding cells, vestibule and lobby area, storage and server areas and a small impound yard.
Construction also began on a $5.7 million recreation center in Bakersville, which will include indoor facilities as well as outdoor fields for baseball, softball, soccer and t-ball. In addition, the Creek Walk will be expanded ultimately resulting in a walking path from the new law enforcement center to the head of Cane Creek.
These four projects represent more than a $75 million investment in Mitchell County that will impact the lives of local residents as well as the local economy.
