Five members of the Mitchell Mountaineers Marching Band were recently selected to perform in the regional Mars Hill Honor Band.
Clara Hutchings, Katie Ollis, Valeria Juarez-Procopio, Madison Smith and Serenity Sobolefski were tabbed for the honor by being considered the best high school musicians in the area.
The Honor Band included a two-day intensive late last month.
The Mitchell students traveled to Mars Hill on Friday afternoon and received their music. They rehearsed all evening Friday and most of the morning on Saturday to prepare for the main event— a concert on Saturday afternoon.
The Mars Hill University Honor Band is an invitational event that creates a weekend of music-making and community.
While the concert band experience is the most valued, students also have the opportunity to participate in Master Classes, interact with Mars Hill music education students and train with Mars Hill faculty in different disciplines.
Senior performers will be eligible to apply for music scholarships and admission to Mars Hill’s music program.
