In January, Mitchell High School’s music program, under the dedicated guidance of band director John Sturgill, celebrated a significant achievement as two of its talented members, Dayln Bullard and Eilidh Winters, were invited to the prestigious Virginia Tech honor band event.

This highly selective event, which draws nominations from five states—Virginia, North Carolina, New Jersey, West Virginia, and Maryland—showcases the exceptional talent of around 1,300 student musicians annually. From these nominations, only about 300 students are chosen to participate, making the selection of Bullard and Winters a testament to their outstanding musical abilities and Sturgill’s commitment to fostering excellence in the band program.

Participants in the Virginia Tech honor band event undergo a rigorous audition process with the university’s music faculty to determine their seating placements. Following this, they engage in an intensive two-day program of rehearsals and workshops led by Virginia Tech’s esteemed music faculty and guest conductors. The event culminates in a performance where students demonstrate the culmination of their hard work and learning.

Sturgill highlighted the invaluable experience this event offers young musicians.

“It gives students the opportunity to see what it is like on a large college campus, as well as gives them the opportunity to play with the best that the surrounding states have to offer,” said Sturgill.  “This participation not only enhances students’ musical skills but also provides a glimpse into future academic and career possibilities in music.”

Looking ahead,Sturgill expressed optimism about Mitchell High School’s continued involvement in the honor band event, stating.

“We plan on returning next year with more nominations, and hopefully more students to participate,” said Sturgill.

This goal reflects the music program’s dedication to nurturing its students’ talents and presenting them on larger platforms.

The participation of Mitchell High’s band members in the Virginia Tech honor band event in January is a significant honor, underscoring the quality of the school’s music education and the potential of its students. It marks a proud achievement for Mitchell High School and sets a high standard for its future musical endeavors.
