The Market on Oak, a cornerstone of Spruce Pine’s cultural and retail landscape, has announced its impending closure. Operated by The Mitchell County Development Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to job creation, education enhancement, and tourism promotion in Mitchell County, the store has been a vibrant hub for over 250 crafters, farmers, musicians, and authors from 25 counties.
Since its inception in 2003, originally as the Home of the Perfect Christmas Tree, the store has embodied the unique cultural values and lifestyle of the Western North Carolina mountains. Its transition to The Market on Oak further expanded its role as a vital platform for local artists, providing both locals and tourists with a unique shopping experience. Beyond its retail contributions, the project has supported local high school students through annual scholarships.
The decision to close the store coincides with the Mitchell County Chamber of Commerce’s relocation to the Mitchell County Visitor Center, aimed at better accessing the 70,000+ visitors from the Blue Ridge Parkway and enhancing support for local businesses. This move has prompted the Mitchell County Development Foundation to reconsider its operational focus, leading to the difficult decision to cease The Market on Oak’s operations.
“The store will be deeply missed and leave a large hole in our community. This will be the last opportunity to buy many of these unique products from the various creative individuals in our area,” expressed Mandi Polly, Executive Director of the Mitchell County Development Foundation. Polly, who also serves as the Executive Director of the Chamber, emphasized the long-standing commitment to providing artists with a venue to sell their creations. Reflecting on the closure, she noted, “It would’ve been the 21st year. I know it’s going to be a big loss for people in the community as well as visitors and artists and vendors.”
Dispelling rumors of financial instability, Polly clarified that the Chamber is looking towards a future that continues to serve the community’s needs effectively.
As The Market on Oak prepares to close its doors, it leaves behind a legacy of cultural enrichment, community support, and a shared history that will be remembered by many. The community is encouraged to visit the store during its final days to celebrate this end of an era and to support the local artisans and vendors who have made The Market on Oak a beloved destination in Spruce Pine.
