As part of the new interior design fundamentals course at Mitchell High, a group of students recently traveled to Appalachian State to learn about the university’s interior design program firsthand.

Mitchell’s interior design fundamentals course is in its first year. It’s part of the school’s Career and Technical Education program.

Upon arrival in Boone, George Valcarcel of the university walked them through the requirements of the program and answered questions the students had about the program and the courses required.

Next, students toured the department. The group met several professors and examined current student work.

Professor Chelsea Helms invited the students to sit in with the current college students in her studio classroom.

The group asked questions while also watching the college students work on their portfolio projects.

The students were invited to return to Boone on April 1 to an Open House event if they wanted to learn more about interior design or Appalachian State in general.
