Fire destroys home

Community rallies around family

On Tuesday, Dec. 19, fire crews rapidly responded to reports of a structure fire at 704 Washburn Road, engulfing the home of the Jones family - a husband and wife with their two boys, aged two years and six months.

Spruce Pine, Parkway, Green Valley, Ledger, and Bakersville firefighters fought to save the home, but by the time the fire was fully extinguished, the property was a complete loss.

In the aftermath, the family managed to salvage a few personal items from the remnants of their home. However, most of their possessions were destroyed in the flames and smoke, including deeply sentimental items such as a wedding ring, photos, and memorabilia belonging to a late family member.

The incident has sparked an outpouring of support from the community, reflecting the tight-knit spirit of Mitchell County.

“We have been so overwhelmed with phone calls, messages, and meeting with people. It’s been a whirlwind. But if one thing had been changed, I could be burying my family,” said Jamie Young-Huskins, mother of the man who lost his house, expressing her relief and gratitude.

The generosity and kindness shown by the community have been overwhelming for the family. “We never dreamed in a million years that a little town could offer so much kindness, generosity, and prayers. It’s a Christmas miracle,” she added.

In less than 24 hours, the community’s efforts ensured the Jones children have everything they need. From the “Shop With A Cop” program bringing a truckload of toys, clothes, and diapers to hundreds of messages of support, the family has felt the warmth and care of the community.

“We’ll grieve, but I have my kids and my grandbabies. My family is safe, warm, and healthy, and that’s what matters. We are beyond blessed” the mother reflected.

The fire, likely started by a propane heater, is a reminder to regularly service heating systems, keep space heaters away from flammable materials, install and check smoke alarms, and never leave heat sources unattended.
