AdventHealth to open new hospital in Weaverville offering labor & delivery

AdventHealth, a non-profit health care system, has plans to build a new community hospital situated off US 25/70 in Weaverville, just west of I-26.

The planned multispecialty hospital will house advanced technology, surgical services, a labor and delivery unit, and an emergency department.

The Labor & Delivery unit at Blue Ridge Regional Hospital in Spruce Pine closed in October 2017.

“After an extensive and very careful analysis, we determined that transitioning labor and delivery services to our regional partners McDowell Hospital, located in Marion, and Mission Hospital in Asheville is the responsible and sustainable decision for Mitchell, Yancey and Avery County families,” members of the Blue Ridge Regional Hospital Board said in a statement at the time.

The AdventHealth hospital will feature 67 acute care beds, addressing the specific needs identified in the North Carolina State Medical Facilities Plan for the service area. With services including a labor and delivery unit with 13 beds and a C-section surgery suite, medical/surgical beds, intensive care units, observation beds, a state-of-the-art surgery suite, and an emergency department, the hospital is set to cater to a wide range of healthcare needs.

The Labor and Delivery unit, dubbed “The Baby Place,” is set to include 13 beds and a specially designed C-section surgery suite. The inclusion of The Baby Place in the new hospital’s service offerings is a direct response to Western North Carolina’s call for accessible, high-quality maternal healthcare services.

The project garnered considerable community support, reflected in numerous letters from county commissioners, mayors, health departments, law enforcement, and other local leaders across the designated service area.

“We do anticipate people will appreciate the opportunity to have access to our hospital closer to where they live,” stated Victoria Dunkle, Communications and PR Director for AdventHealth. “We’re excited to give Mitchell County residents another option for care.”
