Filing period opens Dec. 4

The filing period for the 2024 Primary Election will begin at 12 noon on Monday, Dec. 4 and will end at 12 noon on Friday, Dec. 15. Filing will take place at the Mitchell County Board of Elections, 11 North Mitchell Avenue, Room 108, Bakersville. The 2024 Primary Election will be held on Tuesday, March 5, 2024.

Candidates can file for three seats on the Mitchell County Board of Commissioners. The seats are currently filled by Brandon Pittman, Clayton Roberts, and Harley Masters. The filing fee for a commissioner’s seat is $101.

The Register of Deeds position, currently held by Kathy Laws, will also be up for election. Filing fee is $452.

On the Mitchell County Board of Education, two seats will be up for election. Those seats are currently filled by Brenda Sparks and Sam Blevins. Filing fee is $5.

One seat will be up for election on the Soil and Water Board. The seat is currently held by Ed Terrell. Filing fee is $5.

State positions that will also be on the March primary ballot include: U.S. Representative District 5 Virginia Foxx who represents Mitchell County, North Carolina Governor, Lieutenant Governor, Attorney General, State Auditor, Commissioners of Agriculture, Insurance and Labor, Secretary of State, Superintendent of Public Instruction, State Treasurer, N.C. Supreme Court Associate Justice (Seat 6), N.C. Court of Appeals Judge (seats 12, 14, and 15), as well as various district Superior and District Court judges.

To file for one of these seats a candidate must

• Be 21 years of age

• Be registered to vote in Mitchell County

• Be a resident of Mitchell County

• Pay a filling fee equal to one percent of the annual salary for the office sought

In a partisan Primary candidates cannot make changes to their party affiliation 90 days prior to the date of filing for 

the office.

 

Prepare to vote

Mitchell County voters should prepare now to vote in the upcoming primary election.

Check your registration: You can check your voter registration with the Mitchell County Board of Elections or electronically on the N.C. State Board of Elections web site by going to: vt.ncsbe.gov.

You can also find your polling place and an absentee and sample ballot at this site once they become available. Sample ballots are typically available 50 days prior to Election Day.

Identification required: North Carolina voters will be required to show a photo identification when they check in to vote. If you do not have a photo identification, you may get one at the Mitchell County Board of Elections.

Three ways to vote: There will be three ways to vote in the upcoming primary: early voting in person, in person voting on primary election day, March 5; and vote by mail.
