Economic outlook is strong for Mitchell

Mitchell County’s Economic Development Commission recently released its 2023 report, detailing a vast array of developments and trends shaping the region’s economic landscape. This report is a crucial document for understanding the economic pulse of Mitchell County and highlights various sectors contributing to its growth.

Redevelopment and investments

Significant redevelopment efforts are underway in Mitchell County, with a combined value nearing $1 billion, marking the largest capital spending in the county’s history. Key projects include the $48 million Mitchell Miners middle school, a $14.5 million athletic facility, the $5.7 million Mitchell Recreation Center, and the substantial Sibelco expansion. This expansion, with an estimated investment of $700 million across two phases, is set to enhance Spruce Pine’s status as the world’s premier source of HPQ, vital for the semiconductor and solar photovoltaic industries.

The initial phase, announced in April 2023, involves a $200 million investment to double the facility’s HPQ capacity by 2025. Prompted by growing demand and secured long-term sales agreements, Sibelco has also launched the study phase for a second, even larger expansion. This subsequent phase is projected to entail an investment of around $500 million, extending from 2024 to 2027. These investments reflect the county’s commitment to enhancing educational, recreational, and industrial facilities.

Workforce, population, and income

Mitchell County has witnessed one of its lowest unemployment rates since the 1960s, standing at an impressive 3.2%. This figure not only outperforms the December 2022 state unemployment rate of 4.0% but also ranks the county in the top 30%  statewide. The average private sector salary in 2024 has reached an all-time high of $46,822, with the median household income at $49,086. Furthermore, the county’s population has surpassed 15,000, indicating a growing and economically active community.

Infrastructure and Tier ranking

The report highlights the county’s Tier 1 status as per the North Carolina Department of Commerce, ranking it 40 out of 100 in terms of economic distress. However, Mitchell County is on the brink of ascending to Tier 2 status, showcasing its economic progress. The county’s taxable sales and purchases have also seen a significant increase, further demonstrating its growing economic health.

Goals and strategies

The report outlines nine goals within the “Mitchell Works” strategic plan, adopted in April 2016. These goals span across various sectors including workforce development, infrastructure improvement, industry, small business support, tourism, agriculture, and land development. Noteworthy is the county’s effort in improving broadband and cell phone coverage, which is crucial for modern economic activities.

Local business, industry, and non-profit contributions

Mitchell County’s small businesses and industries have shown commendable growth. The past year saw the addition of 22 new businesses and 9 rebranded or newly owned businesses. The healthcare and mining industries, in particular, have made significant strides in building new facilities and hiring. Buck Stove’s partnership with L&L and the expansion of Sibelco North America are prime examples of local businesses driving economic growth.

Tourism impact

Tourism remains a vital sector for Mitchell County. The report highlights that visitor spending has increased by over $10 million in recent years. The county is actively working to leverage its natural beauty and outdoor recreational opportunities to attract more visitors and potentially outdoor gear manufacturers. An upcoming notable event is the Cycle NC mountains to coast bike ride, starting in Spruce Pine, which is expected to attract thousands of visitors and showcase the county’s appeal.

Future prospects

The report concludes with a positive outlook on Mitchell County’s economic future. By focusing on creating a high standard of living through community-driven approaches, private investment, job creation, and visitor spending, the county is poised for continued growth and prosperity. The Economic Development Commission extends gratitude to all stakeholders for their contributions to making Mitchell County a thriving community.

This report underscores the comprehensive efforts and strategic planning undertaken by Mitchell County to foster economic development, create job opportunities, and improve the quality of life for its residents. The initiatives and projects outlined reflect a dynamic and forward-looking approach, positioning the county for sustainable growth in the years to come.
