County plans to honor area veterans

BAKERSVILLE – Mitchell County veterans are invited to participate in several events honoring their service as part of Veterans Day celebrations in the county.

On Wednesday, Nov. 8, the Mitchell High School Veterans Recognition Ceremony takes place.  Coffee and doughnuts will be served in the library from 10:30 to 11:05 a.m. with a ceremony honoring veterans for their service in the gym from 11:15 to 11:45 a.m. Afterwards, a catered BBQ lunch will follow in the library.  All veterans and their families are invited to attend.

Friday, Nov. 10 will be a special day for veterans at DT’s Blue Ridge Java in Spruce Pine. Veterans will receive a free meal during business hours of 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. 

Saturday, Nov. 11 features two events. First Baptist Church in Spruce Pine will host a Veterans Breakfast beginning at 8 a.m. with all veterans and their families invited to come eat and enjoy fellowship.

At 10 a.m., Mitchell County Chapter 58 of the Disabled American Veterans (DAV) will hold a wreath-laying at the Mitchell County Courthouse in Bakersville. Everyone is invited to attend this ceremony.

At noon on Nov. 11, the Mountain Piecemakers will honor 50 local veterans from Mitchell and Yancey counties with handmade quilts. Veterans who have been chosen to receive the quilts have been notified. The ceremony will take place at noon on the Burnsville Town Square.
