Fundraiser to help MHS student

Residents of Mitchell County are coming together to support one of their own. Troy Gouge, a sophomore at Mitchell High, is known for his fun-loving spirit and sweet nature. Troy was diagnosed with Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS), a rare neurological disorder.

The onset of symptoms was swift and severe for Troy. After a skiing mishap, he initially seemed to have a concussion. However, his condition rapidly evolved as numbness in his legs and feet set in, ultimately leading to a loss of movement in most of his body. The diagnosis of GBS, often linked to a previous infection, has now shifted the focus to a long road to recovery.

Fundraising efforts are in full swing to support Troy and his family during this challenging time. Fundraisers have been set up, with a generous community already stepping forward to help ease the financial burden expected to exceed $100,000 after insurance coverage.

Troy has been transferred from the ICU at Niswonger Children’s Hospital to The Shepherd Center in Atlanta for specialized rehabilitation. Doug and Ellen Gouge, Troy’s parents, have been by his side continuously.

To further support Troy Gouge’s recovery, the Mitchell County community has organized a BBQ fundraiser, “Trays for Troy,” with all proceeds going to assist with the medical expenses incurred by Troy’s family. The event will be held on Jan. 26, with food available for pickup from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Mitchell County Board of Education, located at 72 Ledger School Road, Bakersville.

Each plate is $10, and the community is encouraged to pre-order by Jan. 19. For more information or to place an order, individuals can reach out via email at abiddix@mhslive.net or scook@mhslive.net, or call 828-467-0862.
