Community rallies to save Bakersville Market

kersville is facing potential closure, prompting a heartfelt call to the community for support. Just Local, known for its commitment to local farmers and high-quality, sustainable produce, has exceeded its fundraising goal in a spirited effort to remain a vital part of the community.

Operated by Megan Bell since September 2019, Just Local provides access to fresh, organic produce and locally sourced products like pastured meats, eggs, cheeses, and baked goods.

The market’s journey began prosperously but encountered financial difficulties upon moving to a larger space, which included the addition of a commercial kitchen funded by a grant.

“I run the store, cook, wash the dishes, keep the products stocked, do the books, everything,” Bell explains on the Just Local online fundraiser. Despite her passion and hard work, the financial strain has become unsustainable, especially with recent increases in operational costs.

Bell, a farmer herself, along with her husband who provides beef, eggs, and produce for the store, has seen her ability to manage both the farm and the market drastically reduced.

“The store has never been to a point to pay me,” Bell said, highlighting the sacrifices made to keep the market running. With winter bringing additional financial burdens, Bell turned to the community for support.

Through a GoFundMe campaign, Bell sought to raise $3,500 to cover essential costs, including the installation of a vent hood in the kitchen to allow for cooking in the summer heat, and to provide a modest salary for herself to continue her dedication to the market. The community responded overwhelmingly, raising over $6,100, far surpassing the goal.

“Just Local is about good people, doing good things, because it means something to them,” Bell remarked.

As the Southern Ridge Cafe next door announces its sale, the story of Just Local serves as a reminder of the importance of supporting our small businesses. The success of the fundraising campaign reflects a collective determination to ensure that Just Local Market can overcome its financial challenges and continue to serve the people of Bakersville.
