Budget talks

Boards discuss funding for consolidated school

The Mitchell County Board of Commissioners and the Board of Education recently convened for a joint meeting to review and synchronize the financial strategies necessary for the upcoming new middle school, set to open in August 2024. The meeting emphasized thorough discussions and budget evaluations to ensure comprehensive funding for the school and its associated projects.

The session commenced with an examination of the financial requirements of the new middle school, identifying the cost for essential furniture at $1,391,175.77 and technology needs projected at $550,000, to be funded by grants received by the school.

An important budgetary item addressed was the road widening project associated with the school. This project is projected to cost $650,000 for construction and an additional $100,000 for design and engineering fees, totaling $750,000. While grant funds are expected to cover most of the school-related expenses, the road widening project requires a separate proposal. The school will need to utilize their grant initially for the road project and then seek reimbursement from the Department of Transportation (DOT). The road widening project is expected to take six weeks.

County Manager Allen Cook highlighted the collaborative effort needed to bring this project to fruition, stating, “The cooperation between the county and schools is essential to complete this project that will significantly enhance our children’s education.”

The boards also discussed leveraging the potential sale of two other school properties, Harris and Deyton, contemplating the redirection of funds from these sales towards other capital needs or educational improvements. The active interest from the community in these properties was acknowledged, ensuring their involvement in future decisions.

The consensus called for more discussions and planning sessions to finalize the budget and ensure the successful completion and operational readiness of the new middle school. Community members and school staff are urged to participate in forthcoming public sessions where more detailed plans and financial outlines will be presented.
