Ask Bob Myers about his pizza and he’ll tell you “the proof is in the pudding.”

Myers boasts more than three decades of experience making fresh pizza by hand and already owns and operates Babe’s Pizza and Treats locations in Burnsville and Weaverville.

Add a third location to the list.

Myers has opened his third Babe’s location in Spruce Pine in the Skyview Circle Shopping Center near Spruce Pine Chevy.

It’s a new setting, but Myers is as committed to the craft as ever.

The 83-year-old keeps it simple. He uses fresh, never frozen dough. He tops it with fresh ingredients and serves it up at a reasonable price.

The flagship item? The Double Decker Pizza— essentially a pizza on a pizza. Myers estimates around a third of his clients go all-in on the decadent offering.

A Double Decker starts with fresh dough topped with sauce and any applicable meats. It’s then covered in a layer of cheese. Then come the vegetables.

After that, another crust goes on top and the edges are folded like a pie. Then, more sauce, meats, cheese and veggies. It’s an idea Myers came up with in 1978 and has perfected since.

“It’s a double pizza,” Myers explained. “The whole idea is instead of that much thick bread, you’re eating two thin-crust pizzas stacked on top of each other.”

Myers is originally from West Virginia and got plenty of experience making pies while living in Florida. When he and his wife Phyllis moved to her former home of Burnsville after marrying in 2016, they realized there was a need for good local pizza.

Over the years, Myers has made many pizzas and he’s learned a few tips and tricks that separate him from his competition, like putting the meats under the cheese.

It’s a recipe for flavor and ensures the top layer of pizza doesn’t get soggy.

“What happens to Chuck E. Cheese when they have 40 pieces of pepperoni sitting on top of the cheese? You’ve got 40 little puddles of grease,” Myers said. “Our grease goes into our crust and sauce. The same grease that grandma used for the gravy.  I think it does give it more flavor.”

Babe’s also offers a selection of salads, pasta, wings, subs and desserts.

Babe’s of Spruce Pine is now open at 203 Skyview Circle. The eatery is open Wednesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 9 p.m. Call 520-1350 for information or to place an order.
