SPRUCE PINE – Maude Self Hughes, age 81, of Old Laurel Way in Spruce Pine, the Little Switzerland community, went to be with  her Lord and Savior on Thursday, July 9, 2020.  

Born on July 26, 1938 in Mitchell County, she was the daughter of the late Willard and Louise Collis Self.  In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, C.D. Hughes who passed away in 1998.

Maude was a member of the Chestnut Grove Baptist Church.  She was known as a prayer warrior, loved reading her Bible and enjoyed gospel music.  She was a loving mother and grandmother.  She also loved working in her garden, canning, cooking, and her flowers.  Maude was also known as a giving person that never turned anyone away.  

Left to cherish her memories are her sons; Patrick Hughes and wife, Chrissy of Burnsville and Stephen Hughes and wife, Kelly of Spruce Pine; her grandchildren; Steven, Daniel, and Chloe; her great grandchildren; Grayson and Brailee; and her sister; Helen Byrd of Spruce Pine.

A time to support the family, share memories, and received friends on Saturday, July 11, 2020 from 1 p.m. until 2 p.m. at Chestnut Grove Baptist Church. The funeral service was held on Saturday, July 11, 2020 at 2 p.m. at the Chestnut Grove Baptist Church with the Rev’s. Ricky Hensley and Gene Self officiating. Private graveside services and interment was in the Collis Cemetery.
