CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Martha Lou Blackwell Peters died March 07, 2022, in Charlotte, NC. Born July 10, 1938, in Warren, Arkansas to Willie Bess Roddey Blackwell and Gordon Blackwell, she grew up in Warren, where she attended Bradley County schools. She graduated from Hendrix College with a Bachelor of Arts degree and then went to work as a Flight Attendant for Delta Airlines. She married George L Peters in 1961, and several years later they moved to Charlotte NC.
Over the next 25 years, she worked as a Director with the American Red Cross – Greater Carolinas Chapter, Director with the Mecklenburg Unit of the American Cancer Society, and Director with the United Way of Central Carolinas – all while raising four children. Martha and George retired to the mountains of Western North Carolina. Martha returned to Charlotte a few years ago, after the death of her husband.
Martha loved the Sunday New York Times crossword puzzles, making pancakes on Saturday mornings for her granddaughters, the annual high school reunions, the weekly book club, cooking gourmet meals and spending time with her many friends and family.
Martha (aka Marmee) is survived by her son Graham and wife Cynthia of Mooresville NC; daughter Mara of Columbia SC; son Mark of Bakersville NC; and son Robert “Bob” and wife Jena of Charlotte NC; granddaughters Jessica Peters; Wren Peters, Sadie Peters and their mother Erin; and Georgia Peters; nieces Susan B Lewis and husband Billy, Decie B Shirron and husband Gordon, Becky Blackwell and nephew Gordon Blackwell. Martha was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, George L Peters (aka Chief) and brother, William Gordon “Bill” Blackwell.
