John M. Pendley, Jr., age 77, of Forest Hills Drive in Spruce Pine passed away Tuesday, October 25, 2022, at the Charles George VA Medical Center in Asheville.

Born in Mitchell County he was a son of the late John, Sr. and Marcheta Livingston Pendley and was also preceded in death by a brother, James Pendley.

John was a 1963 graduate of Harris High School where he played football.  He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force.  He was a member of the Spruce Pine United Methodist Church and owned and operated Pendley Cabinet Company, had previously worked as a furniture designer for Henredon Furniture and was the original franchise owner of Hardee’s in Spruce Pine.  He attended U.N.C. Chapel Hill, was a member of the glee club and was an avid Tar Heel fan throughout his life.

John was known for his quick wit and funny sayings. He never knew a stranger and anyone that came in contact with him would be sure to laugh.  He was a dog lover, a political man and loved to cook a good meal. But above all else, he loved his family and was known by them as the best girl dad and Papa John.  He was an active member and President of the Spruce Pine Jaycees.  He also served as the state regional director.  John played an intricate part in acquiring the ABC Store in Spruce Pine.

Left to cherish his memory is his wife of fifty-six years; Martha Banner Pendley of the home, his daughters; Michelle Stafford and husband, Tom of Spruce Pine, Tammy Dayton and husband David, of Newdale and Natashia Guice and fiancé of North Myrtle Beach, SC.  He is also survived by two sisters, Mary Robinson of Spruce Pine and Susie Buchanan and husband, Tommy of Burnsville and a brother, Jerry Pendley and wife, Natalie of Florence, AL and seven grandchildren.

A celebration of life service will be on Friday, October 28, 2022 at 2:00 pm at the Spruce Pine United Methodist Church with Rev. Rick Schilling officiating. The family will receive friends from 1:00 pm until the service hour in the church sanctuary.  Inurnment will follow in the Spruce Pine Memorial Cemetery.
