David Powell Buchanan, 40, of the Shoal Creek Community, went home to be with the Lord Wednesday, June 5, 2019, at Mission Hospital after a brief illness. A native of Mitchell County, he was a son of Jerry and Sandra Ball Buchanan of the Bear Creek Community. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Powell and Kay Ball; and paternal grandparents, David and Helen Buchanan. David was a 1997 graduate of Mitchell High School, then received his Bachelor of Science degree in human resources from Gardner-Webb University. He was the social work director for Brookside Rehabilitation for several years until his declining health. He was an expert bow hunter, loving hunting, fishing and gardening.
Surviving, in addition to his parents, Jerry and Sandra Buchanan, is his siblings, Mike Buchanan and wife, Johnie, of Asheville, Darla “Sis” Kegley and husband, Victor, of Mt. Mitchell, and Brandon Buchanan and wife, Daphne, of Bolens Creek; nieces and nephews, Jeremy and Kearstin Buchanan, Nathaniel and Jerod Buchanan, and Tiffany Buchanan. A host of friends and his church family also survive.
Funeral services were 3 p.m. Sunday, June 9, at Bear Creek Baptist Church, where he was a member. Pastor Bruce Cannon and the Rev. Chris Rathbone officiated. The family received friends from 2-3 p.m. before the services at the church. Burial followed in the church cemetery. Pallbearers were Gresham Buchanan, Dylan Burleson, Jason Willis, Charles Hurd, Jeremy Buchanan, Nathaniel Buchanan and Jerod Buchanan.
