SPRUCE PINE — Local students Hunter Zheng, Kyndal Ringwood, Evan Briggs and Ruth Hurtado Urbina have been awarded college scholarships through the Kiwanis Club of Spruce Pine, the club announced earlier this month.
Zheng, the son of Faping and Chen Zheng of Spruce Pine, graduated from Mitchell High this past June with a 4.0 weighted grade point average
Zheng, who was involved in the Mitchell High Future Business Leaders of America, Student Council and Servant Leader Athletes, is attending Appalachian State University.
Ringwood, the daughter of Jessica Hobart Ringwood of Spruce PIne, graduated from Mitchell with a 4.08 weighted GPA.
Ringwood is attending the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where she hopes to earn a Master of Arts degree before pursuing a doctorate in environmental science.
Briggs, the son of Benny Briggs, Jr. and Amy Young of Bakersville, graduated from Mitchell with a 4.11 weighted GPA. He is attending the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.
Hurtado Urbina, the daughter of Chad and Ciji Dellinger, graduated from Mitchell with a 3.0 weighted GPA and is attending Anderson University.
All students submitted applications for the scholarships that compiled academic information, club and extracurricular involvement and personal references.
Students were also asked to obtain personal reference letters, write an essay and describe their personal, educational and career goals.
