BAKERSVILLE – The search for a new Mitchell County Manager has officially begun.

After the Mitchell County Board of Commissioners chose to not re-appoint Kathy Young, who had worked as county manager since 2016, at a Dec. 3 meeting, former county manager and current Bakersville mayor Charles “Chuck” Vines was appointed to the position on an interim basis.

The board began this week advertising the job opening.

“Mitchell County is seeking a skilled professional with proven leadership ability to serve as the next County Manager,” according to the advertisement. “Mitchell County prefers a County Manager who will successfully establish and foster both internal and external relationships. The five-member governing Board of Commissioners is seeking a candidate with strong finance, budget, administrative and leadership skills who will also encourage growth. Additionally, the County Manager will lead employees across multiple departments and build teams to provide quality services to the County’s citizens while receiving direction from the Board of Commissioners.”

Preferred qualifications for applicants include a bachelor’s degree in public or business administration, economics, finance or a closely related field; or an equivalent amount of education, training and experience that would allow the candidate to successfully perform the essential functions of the position, according to the advertisement. The board also prefers candidates with five or more years of successful supervisory and management experience with strong administrative, budgeting and communication skills.

Mitchell County has 104 employees across 17 departments and a total budget of $20 million. The County Manager serves as chief administrator of county government and maintains responsibilities for administering all departments under the general control of the five-member board of commissioners.

The deadline to submit an application is Friday, Jan. 3, 2020. Visit the Mitchell County Administration Building at 26 Crimson Laurel Circle, Suite 2, in Bakersville or visit mitchellcounty.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/EmploymentApplication.pdf to obtain an application and for a complete job description.

The county is also accepting applications for a Human Resources Director and a Clerk to the Board.
