Spruce Pine has a new spot for waterfront strolls: Riverbend Park on Stroup Street.
The parks play a significant role in Mitchell County serving as popular spots for gatherings, and outdoor activities. Many people go daily to walk, play pickleball, or just to be outdoors. They give many people a place to go that is quiet.
Martin and Freida Lynch are a married couple and residents of Spruce Pine. They live near the new park, and enjoy going frequently. Originally from Ireland, the Lynches were able to find a home in Mitchell County.
“It’s great to finally have something like this in the area, you can picnic here, or just sit and watch the river flow,” said Martin Lynch.
Spruce Pine Town Manager Darlene Butler said Riverbend Park will be mostly focused on the river that lies close to it.
“This Park is meant to be river- focused, used for fishing, canoeing, picnics, etc.,” Butler said.
For people to be able to have another park, “the town used grant funding from the State Capital and Infrastructure Fund,” said Butler.
The new park will have similar hours as every other park, and many are excited for its opening.
“The river here is so beautiful, and the birds and nature is at its best here,” said Spruce Pine resident Freida Lynch. “People don’t realize how many fabulous things happen in the mountains.”
There are so many new features to the park that no other parks in Spruce Pine have yet. There are hammocks set up, along with a shaded trail, and even public restrooms.
“One of the things I love about this particular park is the amount of shade, and good fishing,” said Martin Lynch. “This park is one where you can come down here and eat a sandwich and have a drink.”
The park opening means something to the residents of Spruce Pine like Martin and Frieda Lynch.
“This park is nothing but good for the community,” said Martin Lynch.
