Mitchell High students enjoy educational trip to Washington, D.C.

Forty Mitchell High School juniors visited Washington, D.C. earlier this month for an educational multi-day trip.

The first day was spent touring Monticello, the home of Thomas Jefferson. Upon arrival in D.C. on Saturday morning, the students started their walking tour with Lincoln, Vietnam Wall, Vietnam Women’s and World War II Memorials.  

At the WWII Memorial, students saw an Honor flight ceremony of WWII, Korea and Vietnam War Veterans from Texas. At each of these stops, the students were in small groups and given information about the site from their chaperones. 

Students received a bird’s eye view of the city from the Washington Monument and toured the Capitol along with visits to the Holocaust and Smithsonian Museum of American History.  

On Sunday, the day started at the Marines War Memorial which depicts the flag raising on Iwo Jima during World War II.  

At Arlington Cemetery, students witnessed the Changing of the Guard at the Tomb of the Unknowns, viewed the eternal flame at President Kennedy’s grave, toured General Robert E. Lee’s House and saw Audie Murphy’s grave.  

After touring George Washington’s home at Mount Vernon, the students visited the Jefferson, Franklin Roosevelt, Martin Luther King Jr.and Korean War Monuments. On the way home Sunday, students visited the National Museum of the Marine Corps at Quantico, Virginia.
