Mitchell High School students on Wednesday, May 11 taught children enrolled at Head Start about the importance of heart health through “Heart Healthy— Olympics Day” outside on the school’s campus.

First, the Mitchell students from Katy Grindstaff’s health science CTE course and health occupations (HOSA) students led the Head Start children through a 3D heart obstacle course.

While exploring the course, the high school students explained the basics of the heart and what it takes to be heart healthy. The materials for the obstacle course were purchased through a Bright Ideas grant from French Broad Electric.

After the obstacle course, the high school students led children through five other events that all incorporated heart-healthy exercises. The younger kids earned “Olympic” medals for events completed and won.
