The Mitchell Mountaineers made short work of the Owen Warhorses in what could have been seen as a “trap” game, winning 45-6.
The Mitchell High School football team started the scoring early, with a 50-yard touchdown run by Kaj Pittman on the third play of the game to go up 7-0.
The Mountaineers held on defense, and then scored again on a pass by Caleb Cook to Isaiah Turner to make the game 14-0. Cook ran for a touchdown to cap the first quarter’s scoring, and Mitchell led 21-0.
The Mitchell defense held for the entire second quarter, and a Chris Wences field goal to end the second quarter made the game 24-0 at half.
The rest of the game was more of the same, with Mitchell dominating on defense and scoring at will on offense, and the Mountaineers finished the game with a 45-6 victory.
Next week, the Mountaineers will be hosting the #1 MaxPreps ranked Mountain Heritage Cougars, who are 6-0 on the season. The Cougars are led by senior quarterback Brandon Quinn, who has accounted for 12 rushing and 6 passing touchdowns on the season.
The Mountaineers will attempt to lock down a Mountain Heritage offense that averages over 42 points a game.
The game time for Mitchell – Mountain Heritage at Memorial Stadium will be 7 p.m. Friday.
