SPRUCE PINE, N.C.— On Saturday, July 31, 2021, Mary Ann Hughes, age 95, of Spruce Pine, NC went home to be with her Lord. A lifelong resident of Mitchell County, she was the daughter of the late James and Nancy McKinney Jones. She was also preceded in death by her seven brothers, and her loving husband, Luther Hughes who passed in 1999.
Mary loved her Lord and served Him as a Sunday School teacher and a mentor to so many. In the past few years of her life, as her health declined, she still served her Lord with her smile and sweet spirit. She attended Liberty Hill Baptist Church.
Left to cherish her memory are her children: James Hughes (Gail) of Newland, Eloise Biddix of Marion, Virginia Buckner (Keith) of Spruce Pine, Edward Hughes of Green Mountain, Linda Miller (Mearl) of Spruce Pine, Kathy Nunnally (Steve) of Marion, and Nancy McMahan (Dennis) of Spruce Pine; 10 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren and 10 great great grandchildren.
The family would like to extend a special “Thank You” to all the staff of Hospice and Palliative Care of the Blue Ridge for their love and care.
Funeral Services were held on Tuesday, August 3, 2021, in the Liberty Hill Baptist Church with Pastors Alvin Carpenter, Brent Frady and Rev. Keith Buckner officiating. The family received friends one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in the Bennett Cemetery of Pigeon Roost Road, Green Mountain, NC. Memorials may be made to Hospice of the Blue Ridge, 236 Hospital Drive, Spruce Pine, NC 28777.
