ESTATOE, N.C.— Ida Jewel Hughes, age 75, of the Estatoe Community, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, February 3, 2021 at the Brian Center in Spruce Pine.  

A native of  Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Bill and Winona Phillips Roland and the wife of the late John Raford “J.R.” Hughes, who passed away in 2018.  She was also preceded in death by sisters:  Jean Mecimore and Wilma Roland and brothers:  Curtis Farr, Verlie Farr and Eddie Roland.  Jewel attended Altapass Baptist Church.  She loved cooking and arranging flowers.  

Surviving is Keith Miller (An-gel), who she considered a son, of Spruce Pine; her pride and joys:  Izabell and Bryson Miller, who she considered her grand-children; and sisters:  June Ward and husband, Bernie, of Marion, Alma Kinsland of Clyde, Louise Buchanan of Spruce Pine, Grace Buchanan of Asheville and Lillie Mae Guge of Maryville, TN.  Numerous extended family members also survive.  

Funeral Services were held at 2 p.m. on Monday, February 8th at Altapass Baptist Church.  Pastor Dr. Marcus Benfield and Rev. Tony Lominac will offici-ate.  The family received friends from 1 until 2 p.m. prior to the services at the church.  Burial will follow the services in the Crabtree Chapel Baptist Church Cemetery.
