Locust Street in downtown Spruce Pine will soon get smoother.

The Town Council during its regular meeting on Monday, March 14 unanimously approved a decision to repave Locust Street at the request of Town Manager Darlene Butler.

Butler brought up the topic during her regular report. She noted that the road has several rough spots caused by the recent sewer line project. The project has left several areas rough and patched up.

Moretz Paving quoted $138,700 for the project but that’s subject to daily changes as prices shift.

The project is slated to be divided into three sections. It’ll also be necessary to mill down current asphalt two inches below sidewalks.

Finance Officer Crystal Young said American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds can be used for the project.

Larry McKinney made the motion to proceed with the project which was seconded by Rocky Buchanan and carried unanimously.

While on the paving subject, the council also heard from Tim Kearns on behalf of The Grove Church. Kearns showed the council photos of the sidewalk in front of the church building, which appears broken.

The church requests that the town pay replace the sidewalk and repave a 211-square-foot section of parking owned by the town that sits beside the church building.

Kearns presented a pair of quotes for the project— one for $2,300 to repave the small parking area and another for $2,400 to replace the sidewalk

The town this past year replaced the sidewalk on Topaz Street.

The council will inspect the parking area beside the church and will get more information while considering removing the sidewalk, repaving and painting a crosswalk.
