The holiday season revolves around giving. The Little Switzerland Ladies Club did their part.

The club traveled to Gouge Elementary School on Friday, Dec. 3 to deliver 20 $50 gift cards to teachers as a token of gratitude for the work educators have done in the community during the pandemic.

Club President Debbie Moore, Treasurer Joyce Wright and Scholarship Committee Chairman Sue Lanier met the Gouge teachers in the cafeteria, taking a moment to thank them before handing out the envelopes with prepaid gift cards inside.

The club presented gift cards to help fund classroom supplies, which teachers often pay for out of pocket. Moore said they selected Gouge because it had a great need and has been impacted heavily by COVID.

“We’re so grateful to be able to give back to our teachers,” Moore said. “This past year has been so difficult for all of us, but especially the educators who are on the front lines.”

The Ladies Club donates and holds fundraisers to help the community. The gift card giveaway was added on top of the club’s commitment to award three Mitchell High seniors a $1,000 scholarship to further their education. Donations are always welcome to help the club provide services to the community.

“This is a small way we can tell them they’re appreciated and show how much they mean to our community,” Moore said.

The teachers applauded after Moore addressed them and began handing out the cards. Gouge Principal Colby Calhoun thanked the club.

“These past couple of years have been difficult for everyone,” he said. “Teachers have been working extremely hard and have been a stabilizing force for our students. Teachers deserve all of the recognition for their dedication to our students, school and community.”

The Little Switzerland Ladies Club aims to promote fellowship, service and community awareness. It meets each year May through October on the last Tuesday of each month, except for October when it meets on the second Tuesday.

Meetings are in Little Switzerland Geneva Hall at 10:30 a.m. The club averages more than 50 members each year. Meetings feature local speakers. The club has field trips, arts and crafts and more. For info, call Moore at 336-403-8076.
