Recovery: Grant helps schools fund tutors, bus monitors

The Mitchell County Schools Board of Education met for its regular monthly meeting last Thursday.

Tutoring grant

Gregory also spoke about a SERV (School Emergency Response to Violence) grant that has been awarded to MCS. SERV is a federal program that offers assistance to schools that have experienced a violent or traumatic event.

In this case, Mitchell schools will be receiving $343,098 to recover from the aftermath of Helene (downgraded to a tropical storm after slowing down over land).

“The things that we have written this grant for are for tutors, for all our schools for next year during the school day, reimbursement to pay for the bus and the restroom monitors that we had to have when we first came back,” Gregory said.

The grant will also cover funding for summer school.

Morehead-Cain Scholar

Associate Superintendent Jennifer Gregory gave a presentation on graduating student Chloe Cook, who was recently a Morehead-Cain Scholar to attend the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

“I’m excited to recognize Chloe Cook, who has been named a Moorhead-Cain scholarship recipient for the 2025 school year, starting in the fall of 2025 at UNC,” Gregory said. “This is a very prestigious award.”

Cook spoke briefly about her excitement looking forward to her college career and the additional training and support that the Morehead program offers.

“One thing that sets Morehead apart from all the other scholarships, I think, is all the summer experiences,” Cook said. “This summer is outdoor leadership. … They’re going to send me to the wilderness for a month, no phone, and backpacking.”

Rescheduled meeting

The board members voted to change their next meeting time to June 30 at noon.
