Rising Mitchell High School seniors Brinkley Hodshon and Addison McEntire attended the American Legion Tar Heel Girls State summer camp from June 11-17 at Campbell University.

Rising seniors from across the state spent the week at the camp creating a city government, political parties and a state government. They elected officials, wrote and debated bills, created working governments and attended various workshops to prepare them for their senior year and college.

Students installed new state officers, listened to engaging speakers and attended a college fair.

The camp aims to improve citizenship for present and future generations of Tar Heels and familiarize attendees with political processes and the structure of North Carolina's government.

The camp also aims to develop civic leadership and pride in American citizenship, instill in the citizens of Tar Heel Girls State an appreciation for American traditions and belief in the United States, develop a sense of individual obligation to community, state, and nation and ensure the principles of justice, freedom and democracy will continue for posterity.

Hodshon and McEntire were both sponsored by American Legion Post 122 in Burnsville.
