BLACK MOUNTAIN — The Mitchell High varsity football team rolled to a 55-27 win at Owen on Friday, Sept. 24, improving to 4-2 overall and 2-0 in Western Highlands Conference play.
Junior quarterback Ty Turbyfill got the scoring started early with a 40-yard touchdown run in the game’s first three minutes. Owen answered with a touchdown run of its own to tie the game at 7 before Mitchell scored three straight touchdowns— another run from Turbyfill, a passing connection between Turbyfill and Gage Young and a touchdown run by Young— to quickly regain the lead.
Owen closed the first quarter with a passing touchdown that made the score 28-14 but Mitchell reeled off 14 unanswered points before halftime behind another Turbyfill touchdown run and a 30-yard touchdown scamper by Chase Duncan.
The Mountaineers led 42-14 at halftime.
Enrique Huaroco and Duncan scored touchdown runs in the second half while the Warhorses added a pair of rushing touchdowns of their own, making the final score 55-27.
Turbyfill led the Mitchell rushing attack with a team-high 181 yards on 18 carries. He scored three touchdowns on the ground.
Duncan ran 13 times for 147 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Young racked up 71 rushing yards and a score on eight carries and Marley McCourry ran 10 times for 37 yards, including a 12-yard scamper.
Turbyfill completed 5 of 7 passes for 57 yards and a touchdown. Gabe Brandt caught three passes for 27 yards and Young caught a touchdown pass for 28 yards. Kaden Phillips had one catch for two yards.
Mitchell’s Elijah Nave tallied an interception and Huaroco earned nine tackles, including one for a loss. Duncan had seven tackles and one for a loss.
The Mountaineers amassed 499 yards of offense on 60 plays while holding Owen to just 266 yards on 43 plays.
Mitchell hosts Draughn in Week 7 as conference play continues. After an 0-2 start, Draughn has won three straight games, most recently routing Avery 42-22.
Kickoff between Draughn and Mitchell is 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 1.
