Longtime NCAA Division I basketball coach Hugh Durham (center in red) recently visited a pair of Mitchell High basketball coaches for a chance to talk about basketball and life.
Beside Durham on the left is Phil McKinney and on his right is Bruce Woody, both of whom previously coached basketball at Mitchell. McKinney and Durham’s wives are seated.
Helen McKinney is pictured on the left and Malinda Durham is on the right. Tim Gardner, a friend of the Durham family, set up the visit. Durham coached and played at Florida State and had coaching stops at Georgia and Jacksonville.
He led his teams to 634 wins. He’s the only coach in NCAA Division I history to lead two programs to their first Final Four appearances, doing so with Georgia and Florida State. Durham, who was inducted into the College Basketball Hall of Fame in 2016, coached greats such as Dave Cowens, Dominique Wilkins and Vern Fleming.
