Billy Julius Matthews, age 92, of Vance Farm Road in Spruce Pine, passed away on Wednesday, November 2, 2022.

Born on December 10, 1929 in Selma, AL, he was last surviving child of the late Daniel Dewitt Matthews and the late Gertrude Lee Cost Matthews.  He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Lou Matthews and his grandson, Kaleb Matthews.  Billy was called out by Christ through God’s gospel into everlasting life in February of 1961.

Billy was a member of the Altapass Baptist Church and was also a member of the Mitchell County Gideon Camp.  He was a faithful child of God.  He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He was retired from the U.S. Army as a First Sergeant and proud to have served his country in three wars including; World War II, Korean War and Vietnam War.

Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Lois Crawford Matthews of the home; his daughter, Kimbra Matthews of Concord, NC; his children; Priscilla Dunn and husband, Mark Buchanan of Hickory, Deborah Smith and husband, Vernon of Celo; Stephen Thacker and wife, Jennifer of Huntersville, NC; Karen Duncan and husband, Bryon of Marion; Nathan Thacker and wife, Rebekah of Spruce Pine and Jonathan Thacker and wife, Julie of Bakersville.  He was “granddaddy” to twenty-two grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren.

The family respectfully requests the honor of your presence at the funeral service for Billy Matthews at 2:00 pm Sunday, November 6 2022 at the Altapass Baptist Church with Dr. Marcus Benfield and Rev. Jonathan Thacker officiating.  A time to support the family, share memories and receive friends will be on Sunday, November 6, 2022 from 1:00 pm until 2:00 pm at the Altapass Baptist Church.  Interment will be in the McKinney Gap Cemetery.  Military graveside honors will be provided by Sgt. E.L. Randolph Chapter #57 D.A.V.
