The leaves changing and temperatures dropping in October can mean only one thing— it’s almost Halloween.

The annual Spruce Pine Main Street Halloween events, including the merchant trick-or-treat, are scheduled for Monday, Oct. 31 from 5-7 p.m. and are slated to be as big as ever.

SPMS and other town officials will hand out candy in the Pocket Park on Lower Street throughout the evening. DJ Bruce Ikard will spin Halloween tunes all evening. There will be a costume contest. Participants should stop in the Pocket Park between 5:30-6:30 p.m. to get their photo made and be entered into the contest. Rules and categories are on the SPMS Facebook page.

There’s parking in public lots on both ends of Lower Street. Pedestrian traffic will flow in one direction, denoted by signs.

A slew of downtown merchants will hand out candy throughout the evening. Confirmed merchants are Hef’s, Live Oak Gastropub, Treasures in the Pines, Bierdock, Spruce Pine Florist, Gustoso Ristorante, Spruce Pine Main Street, Town of Spruce Pine, Tree House Mountain Realty, the Wylie Building, DT’s Blue Ridge Java, Aston James, El Ranchero, Mountain Community Health Partnership, Chill Thai and Sushi, Spruce Pine Library, Mitchell News-Journal, High Country Arms, Fortner Insurance, Mitchell County Safeplace,  the Lions Club, L&L Furniture, Toe River Arts, Blue Mountain Retail, Keen Outdoors, Market on Oak, TREATS Studio, Loam Marketing, Blue Ridge Home Care, the Grove Church and Moondust Lounge. Many of those participating merchants also have their storefronts decorated with their spookiest Halloween decor in the hopes of winning the SPMS Merchant Scarecrow Contest, with winners determined by the amount of “likes” on the respective photos on the SPMS Facebook page.

“We are beyond excited to be able to host Halloween Trick-or-Treat Street again this year,” said Libby Phillips, SPMS executive director. “The merchants really enjoy decorating their businesses and giving back to the community.”
