Potato Field Day – The Mitchell County Center of North Carolina Cooperative is hosting a Potato Variety Field Day at 4 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 3, at 88 Christmas Tree Lane in Bakersville. Call the Mitchell County Extension Center at 828-688-4811 to register.

Summer Concert Series – The Spruce Pine Main Street Music in the Park Summer Concert Series continues from 6-8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 4, at Central Park on Locust Street in downtown Spruce Pine with The Rockabilly’s. Admission is free. Call 828-765-3008 for more information.

Auction – Penland School of Crafts is having an auction of student and instructor work at 8 p.m. Monday, Aug. 7, at the Flex Studio. Substitute teacher training – Mitchell County Schools is offering substitute teacher training from 1-2 p.m. Tuesday Aug. 8, at the Mitchell County Board of Education boardroom. This is a required training session for all substitute teachers prior to substituting during 2017-2018 school year.

 

Meeting – The Mitchell County Public Library is hosting a Solar Eclipse Information Party at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 8, with a presentation by the Bakersville Cub Scouts Pack 515 Den Leader Aaron Young and Cubmaster Wesley Pipes.

Reunion – The descendants of James Madison and Ann Bailey Byrd and Jefferson and Emmaline Edwards Bailey are having their annual reunion at 1 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 13, at Lower Brummetts Creek Church of the Brethren near Relief in Mitchell County. Each family is asked to bring a picnic lunch. A decoration will follow at the family cemetery.

 

Fundraiser – Mitchell County Shepherd’s Staff Empty Bowls Dinner and Silent Auction fundraiser is 5-7:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 19, at Spruce Pine First Baptist Church, 125 Tappan St. Tickets are $25 and can be ordered by calling 828-765-5385.

 

Eclipse party – The Mitchell County Public Library, the town of Bakersville and the Bakersville Cub Scouts are sponsoring an “All-American Eclipse Day” party from 1-4 p.m. Monday, Aug. 21, at the creekwalk soccer field in Bakersville. Each family will receive a free pair of eclipse glasses and seating will be available. A telescope with will be available. Snacks and drinks will be available for purchase.
