Penland School of Crafts is hosting an auction of student and instructor work at 8 p.m. Thursday, May 3, at the Flex Studio on the Penland campus. The auction features work in clay, glass, metals, wood, textiles, printmaking, book arts and other media. No admission charged. Call 828-765-2359 for more information. All proceeds benefit Penland’s scholarship programs.

 

The Mountaineer Cloggers will take the stage for the final time at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 3, at Harris Middle School. Food and fellowship will begin at 6 p.m. in the cafeteria. The program is a free community event. The team would like to recognize Mountaineer Cloggers’ Alumni and they are encouraged to attend the event.

 

National Day of Prayer is Thursday, May 3, at noon and 6:30 p.m. at Riverside Park in Spruce Pine. 

 

Mitchell County Animal Rescue is having volunteer training at 3 p.m. Friday, May 4, at the shelter, 2492 US 19E in Spruce Pine.

 

Plumtree Presbyterian Church is having special meetings with Rodney Hogue the weekend of May 4-6. Meetings will take place at 7 p.m. Friday, May 4, and Saturday, May 5; and 11 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. Sunday, May 6. 

 

The Relay of the Blue Ridge’s annual Survivors’ Brunch is 10 a.m. Saturday, May 5, at Shoal Creek Baptist Church in Burnsville. A special meal and door prizes will be provided at this event. A rummage sale is from 7 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, May 5, at the Spruce Pine United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall on Burleson Hill beside the new town hall. There will be clothes, housewares, furniture, electronics, tools and more. Call the church office at 828-765-7446 with any questions.  

 

The 2018 Mitchell FFA Spring Plant Sale is 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday, May 7, at the Mitchell High School Greenhouses. Plant prices range from $2 to $12. Cash or debit/credit accepted.

 

Mountain Piecemakers Quilt Guild meets Tuesday, May 8, at the Town Center in Burnsville. Social hour is 6:30 and meeting at 7 p.m. Program will be a lecture on Improvisational Quilting by Miriam Coffey. Visitors are welcome.

 

The grand opening for The Farmers Market at Penland is 2-6 p.m. Thursday, May 10, at 2627 Conley Ridge Road. The Dye Shed in the heart of Penland’s campus will host a weekly Farmers Market. Come meet your neighbors and get local food and farm products. There will be baked goods, cheeses, mushrooms, organically grown produce, farm fresh eggs, meats and more.

 

Free self-defense classes are being offered Saturday, May 12, by First Baptist Church of Spruce Pine Senior Pastor Rocky Branch. Classes are 10-11:30 a.m.; noon-1:30 p.m.; and 2-3:30 p.m. Classes are limited to 10 people per class. A sign-up sheet is available at the church, 125 Tappan St.

 

The Rural Transportation Coordinating Committee and Rural Transportation Advisory Committee of the High Country RPO meets Wednesday, May 16, at the High Country Council of Governments, 468 New Market Boulevard in Boone. The RTCC meets at 10 a.m. and the RTAC at 2 p.m. A public hearing for the RPO Prioritization 5.0 Priority Needs List and the fiscal year 2018-19 Planning Work Program will be during the RTAC meeting. The meetings are open to the public.
