Penland School of Crafts is hosting an auction of student and instructor work at 8 p.m. Thursday, May 3, at the Flex Studio on the Penland campus. The Mountaineer Cloggers will take the stage for the final time at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 3, at Harris Middle School. Food and fellowship will begin at 6 p.m. in the cafeteria. The program is a free community event. The team would like to recognize Mountaineer Cloggers’ Alumni and they are encouraged to attend the event.

The grand opening for The Farmers Market at Penland is 2-6 p.m. Thursday, May 10, at 2627 Conley Ridge Road. The Dye Shed in the heart of Penland’s campus will host a weekly Farmers Market. Come meet your neighbors and get local food and farm products. There will be baked goods, cheeses, mushrooms, organically grown produce, farm fresh eggs, meats and more.
Free self-defense classes are being offered Saturday, May 12, by First Baptist Church of Spruce Pine Senior Pastor Rocky Branch. Classes are 10-11:30 a.m.; noon-1:30 p.m.; and 2-3:30 p.m. Classes are limited to 10 people per class. A sign-up sheet is available at the church, 125 Tappan St.
The Rural Transportation Coordinating Committee and Rural Transportation Advisory Committee of the High Country RPO meets Wednesday, May 16, at the High Country Council of Governments, 468 New Market Boulevard in Boone. The RTCC meets at 10 a.m. and the RTAC at 2 p.m. A public hearing for the RPO Prioritization 5.0 Priority Needs List and the fiscal year 2018-19 Planning Work Program will be during the RTAC meeting. The meetings are open to the public.
