CHEROKEE – The Mitchell Mountaineers wrestling team started the new year off by capturing the team title at Cherokee’s annual Onsley B. Saunooke Memorial Tournament.
Nine Mountaineer wrestlers placed, including seven finalists and four individual tournament champions. Mitchell narrowly edged the Swain Maroon Devils to claim the team title, winning three-of-four head-to-head matchups in the finals to secure the team title.

Emily Burleson, Dylan Lowery and John Cox all finished second in their respective weight classes. Josh Forbes and Jose Guardian finished third and Israel Maltba finished fourth.
The win marks the first tournament win of the season for the Mountaineers, who finished second at the Quartz Corp. Duals over Christmas break and fourth at the Smoky Mountain Grapple.
