Warren does well in summer golf matches
SPRUCE PINE – Harris Middle School seventh-grader Connor Warren has spent his summer break playing in several golf tournaments.
Warren, 12, is a member of the Tar Heel Youth Golf Association. He won the Triad One-Day at Salem Glen golf course in Clemmons July 9 with a score of 76 and shot an 83 Thursday, July 19, at a One-Day at Lake Hickory Catawba Springs and finished second.
Between those two tournaments, Warren competed July 14-15 in the Carolina Golf Association Junior State Boys’ 13-and-Under Championship at Asheboro Municipal Golf Course, in which he shot a 77 and finished tied for 11th in a field of 43. Warren’s finish in stroke play earned him a No. 12-seed in the championship flight of match play competition against No. 5-seed Jace Butcher, of Wake Forest.
Warren was leading Butcher by a stroke going into the eighth hole and sank a two-foot putt for birdie. Butcher then sank a 25-foot putt to tie the hole and Warren maintained his one-stroke lead going into the ninth and final hole.
Warren made par on the ninth hole and Butcher sank a 40-foot putt from the fringe to tie the match and force a playoff hole.
Butcher made birdie on the playoff hole to claim the win.
