Track team members prepare for regionals
The Mitchell High School track team competed Thursday, May 2, at the Western Highlands Conference Championship at Polk County High School.
Sophomore Jill Pittman earned a pair of first-place finishes for the Mountaineers, winning the girls’ 100- and 200-meter dashes with times of 13.91 and 28.94, respectively.
Junior Hannah McMahan finished third in the girls’ 800-meter run with a time of 2:39.70.
The Mountaineers also garnered five fourth-place finishes at the meet. The girls’ 4x100-meter and 4x200-meter relay teams finished fourth, as did the boys’ 4x100 and 4x200-meter relay teams. Junior Michael Robertson also placed fourth in the boys’ shot put finals.
The boys’ 4x200-meter relay team of Tyler McKinney, Ty Sparks, Ethan LaPlante and Harrison Horney qualified for regional competition Saturday, May 11, at Lenoir-Rhyne University in Hickory. The boys’ 4x100-meter relay team of McKinney, Sparks, LaPlante and Tanner Duncan also qualified for regionals.
LaPlante and Horney also qualified in the 200-meter dash as did Sawyer Blevins in the 400-meter dash.
Kade Hoilman in the discus and Robertson in the shot put also qualified for regionals.
Pittman qualified in the 100- and 200-meter dashes for the girls and Hannah McMahan qualified in the 800-meter run.
